Advice to students who are not getting what they expected, hoped for or wanted on quizzes and tests:

Dear Student,

If you want to do really well on the quizzes and the exams, here is the approach you want to take:

Make sure you can do every homework problem before you get to the class in which it is due. This way, you can put board problems up and gain points on the final exam. In order to do this, you need to attempt all the assigned problems on the day they were assigned. Any that you are unable to do, get with your tutor, a study-buddy, the Math Lab, or me (or any combination of the above), to figure out how to do them and be ready in the next class. Bring your attempted solutions to the problems with you to whoever you are going to for help so that they can see what you do and what you don't understand. Don't count yourself as having figured out how to do a problem until you can take that problem with a blank sheet of paper and work through it to get the correct answer. Seeing someone else do it doesn't count!

This takes a lot of time and effort, but it will give you the results you want. Whenever I give homework on Tuesday, feel free to schedule an appointment to come see me on Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday after you have done all you can on the homework. If I give an assignment on a Thursday, feel free to schedule an appointment to come see me on Thursday afternoon, Friday morning, or Monday. You must NOT wait and see me to figure out how to do the whole assignment. You must do that work ahead of time with a tutor, a study-buddy or in the Math Lab. You need to use me to help you with whatever you haven't mastered that those resources were unable to help you figure out.

This approach to learning how to do the homework problems will give you remarkable improvement if you follow it with determination and a relentless spirit.

Let me know what you think and if you wish to let me help you, email me for an appointment during my office hours. Make sure you have already completed the given homework assignments and bring your work with you.
